Module 1

Spontaneous Activity

A Do-Observe-Learn-Plan worksheet for trying an activity and reflecting on what you notice.

Example Spontaneous Activity Example

Here is an example of a completed spontaneous activity worksheet entry.

The person has provided a specific description of a 'Do' activity they undertook for improved workplace functioning and wellbeing.

Several observations were noted while undertaking the 10 minute walks. Note the person recorded 'internal' (e.g., emotional experiences), but they could have also recorded any important 'external' observations (e.g., behaviour of others).

Worksheet

The spontaneous activity worksheet has four columns:

  • Do: Describe the activity or event, giving specific details (e.g., number of times, people involved, location, etc) and/or behaviours where possible.
  • Observe: Record what you notice both inside your body (thoughts, feelings, etc) and in the external environment (e.g., behaviour of others).
  • Learn: Attempt to answer the question why the 'Do' activity lead to the observations made in column two of the table. Focus on the most noteworthy observation if you have a lot of text in the Observe column.
  • Plan: How will you use the insights recorded in the Learn column in the future?
