Problem Solving

A structured worksheet for defining a problem, weighing possible solutions, and planning and reviewing the one you choose.

How it works

The worksheet is divided into three sections:

  1. Define the Problem: Here you describe the challenge in specific detail, noting specific behaviours, frequency of occurrence, etc.
  2. Identify and evaluate potential Solutions: Use columns 'Brainstorm Solutions', 'Solution Pros' and 'Solution Cons' to identify and evaluate possible effective responses to the issue you face
  3. Implementation and evaluation: Use columns 'Select Solutions', 'Plan & Action', and 'Evaluate Outcome' to record your experiences and the result of using the selected solution.

1. Define the Problem

Describe the problem you want to address by recording a detailed, clear description (e.g., I am frequently late to work because I do not plan or organise my time first thing in the morning).

2. Identify and evaluate potential Solutions

Brainstormed Solutions: Write as many potential solutions as possible, regardless of how easy/difficult they may be to implement.

  • Solutions Pros: Write the pros or advantages of each brainstormed solution
  • Solutions Cons: Write the cons or disadvantages of each brainstormed solution

3. Implementation and Evaluation

Select Solution(s): Based on your evaluation of proposed solutions pros and cons, choose a strategy you want to implement.

Plan & Action: Write a detailed method for actioning the solution you decide to use.

Evaluate Outcome: Write notes on what happened in using the selected solution, and describe any key observations or learning points.
