This Week: Understanding What Your Boundaries Are Telling You

This week is about looking beneath a difficult interaction — exploring what mattered to you, what you carried into it, and how the relationship itself may be shaping your journey.

Boundaries 2

1. Guiding Stars — What mattered to you?

Think of a recent situation where you felt uncomfortable, hurt, frustrated, taken for granted, or that a boundary had been crossed. Ask yourself: What value of mine may have been crossed or come into conflict here? It might be respect, honesty, fairness, loyalty, autonomy, trust, kindness, privacy, reliability, or something entirely different. Then reflect: Why does this value matter to me? What did I need in that situation that I didn't receive? Is the conflict about what happened — or what it represented to me?

2. Backpack — What am I carrying into this?

Our reactions don't begin only in the present. Sometimes an experience touches something we have been carrying for much longer. Ask yourself: Does this situation feel familiar in some way? Have I felt this way in other relationships or periods of my life? What past experiences might be adding weight to what I'm feeling now? Is my Backpack helping me recognise something important — or making this situation feel heavier? The aim isn't to dismiss your present feelings as being "because of the past." It is simply to understand everything that may be contributing to them.

3. Fellow Travellers — What is this relationship adding to my journey?

Some Fellow Travellers support our growth. Others challenge us. Often, a relationship can do both. Consider the person involved and ask: How does this relationship affect the person I am becoming? Where do I feel supported, respected, or able to grow? Where do I feel restricted, depleted, overlooked, or pulled away from myself? What might need to change for us to travel alongside one another more meaningfully? Bring the three pieces together: What matters to me? What am I carrying? What is this relationship showing me? Then finish with one final question: What is one small boundary I could honour this week that would better reflect what I have discovered?
